Sombrero Reef or Sombrero Key is the most popular and largest reef in Marathon with its 142 foot high lighthouse visible from the seven-mile long Bridge that separates Marathon from Key West. There are more than 10 mooring buoys located at the south side of the Lighthouse creating many interesting dive sites. Sombrero's sand bottom is very uneven with huge coral cliffs, sand ravines and canyon-like alleyways creating breath-taking underwater landscapes just north of the lighthouse. The outer reef side hosts some amazing walls full of barracuda's that guard it. Protected by the Sanctuary Preservation Area (SPA) it is strictly forbidden to take coral with you, to fish or to leave rubbish.
