The Mandalay was a 128 foot long schooner that wrecked at Long Reef, East of Elliot Key, in 1966 during a cruise coming from the Bahamas. She was known as the Red Carpet Ship of the Windjammer Fleet because of all its teak and mahogany furniture and decorations. Crewmembers and passengers were saved but all its precious cargo was stolen before tugboats even had a chance to break her free from the reef, where she finally sank. This double masted sail ship is still in excellent condition and has a brilliant coverage of 50 year old coral growth. Be careful though, as the wreck reaches the surface during low tide which can result in serious injuries.
