Ten Fathom Bar is one of Florida's best mini wall dive sites dropping almost vertically from 25 feet all the way down to 130 feet. A southern edge named Fennel Ridge starts at sixty feet deep which equals ten fathom, hence its name. Ten Fathom is located at only 4.5 miles southwest of Sand Key.
Boaters should know that anchorage is only allowed near the four miles long wall, not on top of it. At 45 feet deep you can see some telegraph communication cables with Cuba encrusted in coral. Black coral, huge barrel sponges, porcupine fish and many other tropical fishes are seen everywhere, especially in the better parts of the drop-off which are between forty and eighty feet. A bit luckier and you will see eagle rays and manta rays floating near the wall waiting for plankton and other small treats. Strong currents of the Gulf Stream create high visibilities, high nutrition crystal clear waters where pelagic species frequently visit. Drift diving along the wall is one of the most popular and best ways to relax and enjoy all the life out there.
