Several dive sites have appeared near Pensacola, out of Pensacola Pass and near Destin. To promote its fishing and diving industry they have started to talk about the scuttling of many famous wrecks. The show of sinking a vessel draws large crowds of tourists, environmentalists are happy that the underwater habitat is maintained while divers and fishermen love to see an extra site to appear.
At the most western point of Florida we have Pensacola which is nearer to neighbouring states such as Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana than it is to its capital Miami. Destin, less than fifty miles east of Pensacola Pass, used to be a small fisherman village but has become a major tourist destination with enough hotels, bars and other entertainment to choose from. Pensacola Pass is famous for its long protected white sandy beaches at Perdido Key and its Spanish colonisation. Tours in Pensacola to its inland swamps, savannas and hardwood forests are easily booked. Its natural limestone ridges happen to be close to shore which creates great snorkelling and diving possibilities in warm crystal clear waters. Its nearby US Airforce Base has created several wrecks of aircrafts and missiles to make its underwater life even more interesting.
Shore dives, boat dives, dives on famous wrecks, deep technical dives are all possible in Pensacola. Some of the more popular dive sites around Pensacola are a 19th century unidentified 250 foot long wooden schooner named Brass Wreck and the famous USS Oriskany, a great US Navy aircraft landing ship which served in Korea and Vietnam.
