At just half a mile south of Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale is a two mile long reef all the way to Dana Pier, named Hammerhead Reef. It is a common spur and groove coral reef with several ledges, overhang and millions of crevices and cracks for marine life to hide in. It is a reef along the outer third reef line which often provides for strong currents. Drift diving is therefore one of the most common type of diving that is done here by private and charter dive boats. Drifting along the ledge you will see many large barrel sponges, basket sponges and southern stingrays hiding in the sand. Its name Hammerhead Reef may originate from early times as we haven't heard divers speaking about sightings of hammerhead sharks recently. Unfortunately, but nevertheless it is a picturesque dive site with many tropical coloured fish.
