The 142 foot high lighthouse was built in 1856 and its screw-pile design was one of the first of that type ever build. It was engineer and General George Meade that was responsible to build this lighthouse on top of Dry Banks, named because it lies at the surface during low tide. It was constructed in a skeletal-style tower, while his first choice was a masonry tower, but that would be much too expensive and the forces of the sea would not withstand the structure. The light was fully automated in the year 1960 and even today it informs ships where this still dangerous reef is located.
