The Joseph E. Brown is one of the many liberty ships used as an artificial dive site near Pensacola and Destin to remember the many men that died during World War II. She was built in Savannah, Georgia in 1943 by the South-eastern Shipbuilding Corporation and named after a Georgian governor and senator. Many of these liberty ships were built by civilians and transported men, cargo and food to allied forces back in Europe. Today, she is located at thirty miles south-east of Pensacola Pass and twenty miles south-west of Destin Pass. The five hundred foot long liberty ship Joseph E. Brown was scuttled on September 29, 1977 and is filled with marine life.
