The Rebel or St Andrea is a 150 foot long Norwegian freighter transporting cement and fertilizer throughout the North Sea in Europe. Under different owners she was caught smuggling drugs between the Caribbean and Miami in 1984. Confiscated by the government, sold at auction and finally bought and donated to Broward County by a local attorney were her last days of her life. On July 16, 1985 she was finally being sunk on the ocean floor and renamed to Rebel after the attorney's dog. She is located just outside the third reef line at about five mile from Port Everglades Cut, only four hundred yards from the Mercedes Wreck.
The wreck is still intact and sits upright, with its bow pointing north. Several sights of this wreck are its propellers, its hull full of baitfish and spiny oysters and two large pieces of its mast that are spread out across the cargo holds. Especially schools of grunt, barracuda and groupers are common inhabitants near this vessel. At times when the Gulf Stream is cleaning the area divers can see the wreck from the surface. Not only the coral which is growing on the wreck is good, but its adjacent coral reef houses some of the best red gorgonians found near Fort Lauderdale.
