Diving near the Keys of Marathon, Duck Key and Boot Key offer some of the nicest dive sites available in these waters, at just an hour drive from Key West and Islamorada. Divers and marine ecologist alike will know Sombrero Reef, a well protected section of coral-topped ridges. Shipwreck Thunderbolt, a 188 foot long us army cable layer ship, is one of the other well known dive sites in this region.

Marathon is a ten mile long island city which consists out of several keys; Vaca Key, Fat Deer Key, Grassy Key and Boot Key to name a few of the larger ones. Its name is coming from railway workers which called constructing the Florida East Coast Railroad a Marathon job. Activities which are popular at the main land are public beach Sombrero, the Seven Mile Bridge connecting Key Vaca with Sunshine Key and participating in one of the many environmental attractions such as swimming with dolphins or visiting a sea turtle hospital. Tropical Crane Point Hammock is the only archaeological site including museum that displays prehistoric artefacts from Columbia and the Bahamas, while Boot Key harbour, often referred to as the center of Marathon is famous for its brilliant sunsets and marina. It is not hard to find fishing, diving, kayaking, sailing and boating tours in this densely populated city full of restaurants, bars and lodgings.
