Located at only a mile east of Key Biscayne right into the middle reef line, Emerald Reef is probably the largest natural reef in Miami. This shallow-water patch reef is famous for its huge amounts of juvenile fish and excellent breeding ground for many types of tropical fish. Outlying patches of this reef are known as Cuban Freighter Reef, Starfish Reef, Keith's Ledge and Rainbow Reef.

There are strains of hard corals such as pillar and elkhorn coral but beautiful sea fans and sponges are seen in great numbers as well. Remember to drop the boat anchor in the sand as there are no mooring buoys on this reef. This reef is brilliant and colourful according to many divers who compare it with the waters and life in the lower Keys.
