Molasses Reef North is famous for its huge star corals and enormous amounts of reef fish. Especially in the coloured shallow regions between ten and thirty feet you will find many different species, feeding on star coral, elkhorn coral and seafans. A 400 foot freighter named MV Wellwood damaged more than 4000 square feet of reef in 1984, near buoys M11 and M12. Several huge star coral formations were completely pulverized leaving divers with some of the remaining rubble. Ongoing research and projects with polyps have been done to restore the hard corals in this part of the reef, while soft corals were able to recover quite quickly by them selves. The money they got from the settlement with the government is primary used for reef restoration programs. It is a great place to go diving and snorkelling where you will see brilliantly lit coral and where aquatic life flourishes.
