The Thomas Hayward was a liberty ship built in Mobile, Alabama by the Alabama Drydock Company in 1942. She is 360 foot long and served during World War II to transport allied troops from the United States to the war in Europe. One of her heroic adventures was on the 5th of May, 1946 when she struck a mine and was hardly able to get safely back into port. She was turned into an artificial reef in 1977 by the Florida Department of Natural Resources and stays one of the best wreck dive sites near Destin and Pensacola. Today she is famous among divers as well of fishermen. Groupers, flounders, jacks and stingrays are some of the common inhabitants.
