The Cruz Del Sur or Southern Cross is one of the top technical dive sites in the Lauderdale area, located just off Haulover and Aventura. Diving at this 287 foot long freighter can only be done by using a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen (often called nitrox or trimix), because it lies at depths deeper than 200 foot. She was originally built in 1956 in Germany but served most of her time in Georgetown, Cayman Islands as a transport ship. Caught in 1986 by the United States Coast Guard when an illegal storage compartment was found meant the end of her duty. The ship was donated to the Miami-Dade County Artificial Reef Program who created one of the largest technical dive sites situated near Tenneco Towers. Today she is located upright with a crane reaching up all the way to 145 feet from the surface. A nice, deep and dark dive site but very interesting for the advanced professional diver.
