Located six miles northeast of Key Largo, Carysfort Lighthouse is one of the less visited dive sites. Since 1770 when the first ship struck the reef they used light boats which often wrecked themselves or were ambushed by robbers. It wasn't until 1852 that engineers were able to build a 100 feet high lighthouse that stands there in the reef ever since. They used iron pilings in stead of screw piles which were not suitable because of its weak ocean floor. This partly red, octagonal lighthouse was manned and fully operational until 1964 when everything was automated.
There is a spectacular wall near the lighthouse named Carsfort Ledge, Trench or Wall and some other interesting dives to do nearby.
